Reflections from Students

Lariah:
Last year, when I was in the sixth grade, I decided that when I went to seventh grade I wanted to be on the Junior Beta Club. So all through the sixth grade I took every opportunity I could to get good grades and to be a teacher’s assistant. So, when I went into the seventh grade, I was accepted into the National Jr. Beta Club. But not only that, I was the only African American female to get on the team this year. Actually, I was the only African American at all. I am glad that I did this because it has been very rewarding. I plan on being an engineer, but I am not exactly sure which type.

Neveah:
I encourage you to find yourself and discover what you like to do and who you are and what you would like to be known for accomplishing in your life. Remember, to surround yourself with good people that you can learn from and who may have different perspectives and views on life. But, at the same time, who still have a strong work ethic and the desire to work toward pursuing goals and accomplishments in life. Always strive to become better than you are today and remember to have fun and make the most of life.

Eddie:
Remember the decisions that you make today will impact your life and have consequences. Also, think about what you would like to become and work toward achieving that dream everyday in some way, such as changing your attitude, improving your grades, becoming involved in some activities at church, school, or even the YMCA. Just stay focused and success will be yours one day at a time.

KB:
My parting advice is that you must STUDY! I think it is very important to learn as much as you can while you are in school. The knowledge and level of intelligence that you develop in school will serve as a strong foundation for your accomplishments in life; so don’t waste your time in class, use it wisely.

Deserai:
My best suggestion is to put yourself in the right environment (i.e. situations and groups of friends) to be successful, because the environment that you are in definitely makes a difference in how your attitude, thoughts, and outlooks on life develop. There are some situations that are not so great to be in and some friends that are not so great to hang around. Trust me, I’ve been in a few unsupportive situations and you have to break out of them or you will become trapped by the negative influences. After all, this is your life. It is not enough just to have a dream; you must be working to achieve the dream.

Socrates:
My last piece of advice is to remember what the book cover of “You’ve got the Power” says. Everyone has a certain knack, skill, or talent for something in life or a desire that they want to accomplish. So, remind yourself everyday that you can do it. Keep sticking with it and your dream will certainly come true.

Soda:
Well, I say just figure out what you love to do in life (i.e. reading, writing, singing, biology, chemistry, sports, speaking, decorating, drawing, playing music, riding horses, etc.) and remember to study and work hard at becoming the best at what you love to do!
